Productivity advantages
One large trencher (90-150 ton class) can replace up to 15 excavators (20-25 ton class). In addition, trenchers cut the minimum trench width required, which equates to at least 30% less excavation per linear meter of production (trencher vs. excavator).

More production with fewer machines and operators, which reduces logistics costs and makes the workplace easier to manage.
Cost advantages
The cost of purchasing a trencher is similar to the cost of an excavator fleet, however, the cost per linear meter of excavation when using a rock crusher is approximately 55-60% higher than a trencher. Trenchers also have lower operating, labor and maintenance costs than excavators. Large numbers of trenchers and loaders are no longer required, saving a lot of material.
Environmental Advantages
Fewer machines means less CO2 emissions, and by breaking rock into smaller pieces, it becomes a usable backfill material, reducing material waste. Trenchers also produce less dust, vibration and noise than using explosives, so trenchers have the potential to be used near bridges, roads, railways and generally densely populated areas.
Pad and Backfill Advantages
Vertical wall trenches require less backfill material than “V” wall trenches; this makes backfilling easier and less expensive. Backfill material is also easier to compact, reducing the risk of erosion and surface collapse. Looking back, the cost of using an excavator for pad and backfill would be 35-65% higher than a trencher.
Safer Technology
The use of explosives is subject to increasing regulations and restrictions, but trenchers can be used anywhere. Last but not least: fewer people on the job site means a reduced risk of injury or accidents.
